Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)
A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is a procedure designed to narrow the waistline and improve the appearance of the stomach. The aging process creates changes to the abdomen in both women and men, such as decreased elasticity, excess abdominal skin and stretched abdominal muscles.
While diet and exercise form the foundation of most weight loss strategies, many patients discover that exercise alone doesn’t improve the loss of skin elasticity, the presence of stretch marks, or the separation of the abdominal muscles (diastasis). With diastasis, no matter how strong the “six-pack” muscles become, a bulge will be present where the muscles are separated. Pregnancy is a common cause of abdominal muscle separation which can lead to widening of the waistline.

A tummy tuck is suitable for men and women who are in good health. During the surgery, an incision from one hip bone to the other is placed below the bikini line to remove excess skin and stretch marks, and the remaining abdominal skin is tightened. The “six-pack” muscles are tightened and secured back to their youthful, supportive position.
Additionally, conservative liposuction may be used to remove excess pockets of fat. If a patient has no skin laxity or abdominal wall separation, then liposuction-alone may be performed in areas where excess fat exists. Certain patients who have excess tissue isolated to the lower abdomen may be candidates for a mini-abdominoplasty, which results in a smaller scar.
Abdominoplasty surgery is performed under general anesthesia as a day surgery. A typical recovery ranges from 4-6 weeks.
