Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
An arm lift, or brachioplasty, is a common cosmetic procedure to treat excess hanging underarm tissue to produce slimmer, more youthful looking arms. This is done by removing excess skin, tightening and contouring the arms, and removing fat. Aging and genetics can both play a role in the development of excess skin. Redundant skin can also be a result of significant weight loss.
Brachioplasty is effective in both men and women. The ideal candidates for the procedure are those who are in good health, have a stable body weight and do not smoke. The typical scar following a brachioplasty extends from the underarm to the elbow along the inner aspect of the arm.
Details
Brachioplasty generally takes between 1-2 hours and is performed under general anesthesia. Patients typically go home the same day of surgery. On average, it takes approximately 4-6 weeks to recover from a brachioplasty. A tight-fitting compressive garment will be worn during this recovery time. Initially, you should expect a few days of swelling and bruising, and the discomfort is treated with mild analgesics. Most patients are able to resume light activities within 48-72 hours . It is recommended more intense physical activity such as exercise only be resumed 3-4 weeks following the procedure.
